At The Woodlands Nursery, inclusion is not something we switch on for awareness weeks it is part of who we are as a nursery community. April marks Autism Acceptance Month, a time that moves beyond awareness and towards understanding, respect and genuine inclusion. Acceptance asks more of us. It asks us not simply to recognise difference, but to value it.
Every Child’s Journey Is Unique
At the heart of our practice lies a simple belief:
When children feel emotionally secure, they flourish.
Some children, including autistic children, may experience the world as louder, brighter, faster or more unpredictable. Others may communicate, connect or process in ways that look different from their peers.
Our responsibility in the early years is not to change the child. It is to shape the environment and our practice around them.
Inclusion to us means recognising that development is not linear, that behaviour is communication, and that each child’s journey deserves patience, presence and respect.
What Acceptance Looks Like in Our Nursery
Acceptance is lived daily in the small, consistent moments.
Secure Attachments
We prioritise calm transitions, predictable rhythms and consistent key people. Emotional security is the foundation of all learning.
Responsive Environments
We carefully consider noise levels, visual stimulation and the pace of the day. Our use of open-ended, natural and sustainable resources allows children to explore without sensory overload.
Play as Communication
We recognise that repetition, pattern, focused interests or solitary play are not behaviours to correct. They are ways of processing and understanding the world. We observe with curiosity rather than assumption.
Working in Partnership
Families know their children best. We listen, collaborate and ensure that home and nursery experiences feel connected and supportive.
A Holistic Approach for a Changing World
We are increasingly aware of the emotional pressures children face in today’s fast paced society. Many children are finding it harder to regulate emotions, sustain focus and engage deeply in play.
Our holistic, play based philosophy, grounded in calm environments, outdoor exploration, community connection and healthy living, supports all children, including those who are neurodivergent.
Acceptance means slowing down.
It means allowing space.
It means seeing strengths before challenges.
Beyond a Month
Autism Acceptance Month reminds us that inclusion is not about labels or checklists.
It is about:
• Seeing the child before the diagnosis
• Valuing differences as part of human diversity
• Adapting environments, not expectations
• Protecting emotional wellbeing
• Celebrating individual strengths
In our nursery, every child is recognised as capable and unique.
When children feel safe, seen and understood, they do not just participate, they flourish. That is something we are proud to stand behind not just in April, but every day of the year.
